| Description: | Outcome expectancies for caffeine use are thought to underlie caffeine's reinforcing properties. The Caffeine Expectancy Questionnaire attempts to assess caffeine expectancy. The 37-item instrument has four factors representing "withdrawal symptoms," "positive effects," "acute negative effects," and "mood effects." It uses a 4-point agreement scale (e.g., strongly disagree = 1, strongly agree = 4). Factor 1 (Withdrawal Symptoms) consists of 11 items thought to represent symptoms of caffeine withdrawal, such as headache or nausea. Eleven items reflecting positive consequences of caffeine consumption (e.g., cognitive and social arousal) comprise Factor 2 (Positive Effects). Factor 3 , Acute Negative Effects, consists of 8 items thought to represent unpleasant effects of caffeine intoxication such as feeling anxious or jittery. Last, Factor 4, Mood Effects, consists of 7 items reflecting the positive effects of caffeine on mood, such as feeling calmer or relaxed. | ||
